Meet the Artist: Brigitte Grant

Meet Brigitte Grant — the artist behind the Iconic Aussie Summer print!  We were lucky enough to collaborate with Brigitte Grant on our newest product, the Aussie Summer Holiday Bag! This bag captures the essence of Australian summer in a vibrant, nostalgic print.  Each icon in the print is meticulously hand-painted, adding a unique and personal touch to Brigitte's vibrant design. The pattern was made to transport you to the heart of an Aussie summer, full of fun, laughter, and endless sunshine! Join us as we chat all things art, summer and skin with beautiful Brigitte! It’s no secret how talented you are. How did your career begin? I actually began painting in 2020 during the COVID lockdown and quickly discovered how much I loved it! I started sharing my creations on my personal Instagram for friends and family, and when I launched a public art account, things really took off! Follow Brigitte's instagram to stay inspired and up-to-date with her colourful creations! 🌺  🦐  🐚   🌞 We absolutely loved collaborating with you on this 'Iconic Aussie Summer' print. Can you tell us about the creative process and where you drew your inspiration for each illustration? I collaborated with the amazing esmi team to decide on the pattern vibe we wanted, drawing inspiration from my previous work. I usually focus on Euro-inspired patterns, so it was a blast to create an iconic summer design that reflects my home and includes elements from my childhood. We brainstormed our favourite iconic summer items and then I got started on the painting! How would you describe yourself in three words? Creative, vibrant, inspired. 🌺  🦐  🐚   🌞 Would you say your art is a reflection of who you are? I’d say my art is a true reflection of who I am! I’m drawn to bright colours, love to travel, and have a soft spot for all things cute and fabulous. Each piece I create embodies my passion for life and the joy I find in exploring new cultures and experiences. I want my work to evoke happiness and inspire others to embrace their own uniqueness and zest for life! The countdown for summer is well and truly on! What part of Aussie Summer are you most looking forward to? I absolutely cherish the joy that summer and the Christmas holidays bring! It's the perfect time to reconnect with friends you haven't seen all year, especially those who return home from overseas. There’s nothing like spending sunny days at the beach while celebrating the festive spirit and making lasting memories together! 🌺  🦐  🐚   🌞 Do you have any summer rituals or routines? I don’t have many specific summer rituals or routines, but one I truly cherish is heading to my best friend’s house on Christmas afternoon after celebrating with my family. We always have a few fun games of Articulate, and it’s definitely a highlight of the season for me! The warmer seasons can make the skin more prone to congestion. Do you have any personal skincare rituals/routines/tips for when the temperatures start to rise?  I use SPF moisturiser throughout the summer because living in Queensland means high UV exposure! I make sure to exfoliate everywhere, too. I'm absolutely obsessed with the Probiotic Skin Mylk by esmi—it adds a beautiful glow under makeup and is an actual must-have for the summer! 🌺  🦐  🐚   🌞 What’s one song/artist/album you’ll have on repeat these holidays?  Oooo! since the news of the Oasis reunion, I can’t stop playing their songs on repeat. But — I also think we need to enjoy a BRAT Summer too! If you haven’t heard, we’re giving away a ‘Big Aussie Getaway’ to one lucky winner this month. If you won, what area of Australia would you like to visit?  I’d love to explore the Whitsundays! It looks absolutely incredible, and I’m honestly surprised I haven’t been there yet.

Oh hey, AHA & BHAs 👋🏾

Coming into the cooler weather, it's a good time to look at introducing or increasing your exfoliation! The skin goes through changes seasonally and it's a great idea for your skincare to flow with it.  Dry skin, flakiness and increased breakouts are all skin concerns our Skin Service team see an increase in when seasonal change comes into the cooler & dryer months. What better way to keep these concerns at bay than regular exfoliation? AHAs, BHAs or even a blend of the two are great ingredients to introduce to the skin during this time, and allow even a sensitive skin to experience a gentle exfoliation. 🌀 What are AHAs? Typically derived from natural substances, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are a class of chemical compounds that are commonly used in skincare products and loved for their exfoliating properties. Some of the most common AHAs include glycolic acid and lactic acid. 🌀 What are BHAs? Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) are a type of exfoliating acid commonly used in skincare, with the most well-known BHA being salicylic acid. BHAs are oil-soluble, which differentiates them from AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), making them particularly effective for treating oily and acne-prone skin. 🌀 How do these work? These acids provide a great, gentle exfoliation of the skin working to break down the bonds that keep dead skin cells to the surface of the skin, as well as helping to lightly dissolve any debris settling in the pores. This helps reveal a newer, brighter skin underneath!  AHAs break down the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to be sloughed off. This reveals newer, brighter skin underneath. Like AHAs, BHAs also break down bonds but they also penetrate deeper into the pores to clear out excess oil and debris, making them particularly effective for treating acne and blackheads. The buildup on the outer layer of the skin can prevent your skin from receiving the full benefits of your goodies. By using AHAs and BHAs to exfoliate and clear away dead skin cells and impurities, you create a smoother surface that allows serums, moisturisers, and other treatments to penetrate more deeply and work more effectively.  As the fresh, radiant skin is revealed after use, the refined surface helps to improve the ingredient absorption of your other esmi Skin Treats! Skin Service tip:It's best not to stack too many types of acids in your routine - just pick one or two key products containing these. 🌀 Combining AHAs and BHAs While it's generally safe to use AHAs and BHAs together, it’s best to introduce them slowly into your routine to avoid irritation. Some products are formulated with both acids to provide comprehensive exfoliation benefits, but if using separate products, it’s often recommended to alternate them. As we've mentioned, exfoliation is an amazing step in your routine to help refine skin, keeping it smooth and soft. However, it's just as important not to overdo it! Especially during the cooler months when our skin tends to be drier, over-exfoliation can lead to irritation and dryness. Typically, exfoliating 1-2 times per week is more than enough to maintain smooth, glowing skin, but always consider your skin type and adjust accordingly. Remember, a gentle approach ensures the best results! 🌀 What products include these? esmi has a wonderful curation of products containing AHAs and BHAs.  Detoxifying Exfoliating Charcoal Serum10% AHAs (5% Glycolic Acid and 5% Lactic Acid)  Gentle Refine Cleansing Toner3% AHA (Lactic Acid)  1% BHA (Salicylic Acid) Detox Hydra-Fluid Moisturiser 2% AHA (Lactic Acid) Although AHA/BHAs are classically a more gentle form of exfoliation than an abrasive manual exfoliation, it's still best to do a patch test and ease in gently introducing these products if there is pronounced inflammation, a skin condition or sensitivity in the skin.

Marionette Lines Treatment: Everything You Need To Know

Marionette lines — those deep creases that run from the corners of your mouth to your chin— can have a significant impact on both your emotional well-being and physical appearance. While they are a natural part of aging, their presence can affect your self confidence, big-time. Understanding the causes, effects, and treatment options for these lines is crucial for anyone looking to maintain a youthful and confident appearance. What are marionette lines?  Marionette lines are deep creases that extend from the corners of the mouth down towards the chin, resembling the lines seen on a 'marionette puppet'. These lines are a common concern as people age. Deep creases: Marionette lines are often characterised by their depth and distinctiveness, creating a visible groove or indentation on either side of the mouth. Downturned corners: These lines can make the corners of the mouth appear turned downward, even when the person is not actually frowning or unhappy. Ageing effect: They can give the impression of a perpetual frown or sadness, which does not necessarily reflect the individual's true emotions or mood. What causes marionette lines? 💜 Loss of collagen + elastin As we age, the skin naturally loses collagen and elastin, two proteins that help maintain skin's firmness and elasticity. This reduction leads to thinning skin and the formation of deeper lines and wrinkles, including marionette lines. 💜 Gravity Gravity exerts a constant downward force on the skin. Over time, this force contributes to the sagging of the skin, which can deepen existing lines and contribute to the formation of new ones, such as marionette lines. 💜 Facial expressions Repeated facial movements, such as smiling, frowning, or chewing, can cause the skin to crease. Over time, these repeated expressions can lead to the development of marionette lines, as the skin loses its ability to bounce back and retain its smooth appearance. 💜 Sun damage Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can accelerate the aging process of the skin. UV radiation breaks down collagen and elastin fibers, leading to premature wrinkles and deep lines, including marionette lines. 💜 Severe stress Chronic stress can impact overall skin health, leading to inflammation and a breakdown in collagen production. This can contribute to the formation of deeper lines and wrinkles, including those around the mouth. 💜 Unhealthy lifestyle habits  Smoking and other unhealthy habits can significantly affect skin health. Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin, depriving it of essential nutrients and oxygen, which accelerates the aging process and contributes to the formation of wrinkles, including marionette lines. Understanding these factors can help in taking preventative measures and seeking appropriate treatments to manage and reduce the appearance of marionette lines. How do you get rid of marionette lines? Marionette lines, those vertical wrinkles that form around the mouth and chin, can be a common concern as we age. Fortunately, there are several methods to treat or prevent these lines, ranging from natural remedies to professional treatments. Here’s a breakdown of both approaches: How to get rid of marionette lines naturally? Hydration: Keeping your skin well-hydrated is crucial for maintaining its elasticity and suppleness. Drink plenty of water daily and use a moisturiser that helps retain skin moisture. Hydrated skin is less likely to develop deep wrinkles. Facial exercises: Regular facial exercises can strengthen the muscles around the mouth and chin, potentially reducing the appearance of marionette lines. Try exercises like puckering your lips and lifting them or placing your fingers on your smile lines and gently pushing upward. Consistency is key for seeing results. Sun protection: Sun exposure can accelerate skin aging and worsen marionette lines. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Consider incorporating a quality sunscreen with products designed to shield your skin while also providing nourishment. We recommend esmi's Skin Shield Sunscreen SPF 30 or any sunscreen from the Sun Skills SPF range. Healthy diet: A balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fats supports skin health. Foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish can improve skin elasticity and repair damage. Ensure your diet includes vitamins A, C, and E, which are known for their skin-rejuvenating properties. Serum: Serums can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Look for products that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, retinol, or peptides, which are known for their anti-aging benefits. These serums can boost collagen production and improve skin texture over time. We recommend esmi's Ageless Hyaluronic Serum, Afterglow Rejuvenating Bakuchiol and Golden Anti-Ageing Serum.  Marionette Lines professional treatments  Botox: This treatment involves injecting botulinum toxin into specific facial muscles to relax them. While Botox primarily targets dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement, it can help improve the overall appearance of the face, indirectly affecting marionette lines. Dermal fillers: Fillers are injected into the skin to add volume and smooth out wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers, for instance, can be used to plump up the areas around the marionette lines, making them less noticeable. Laser treatments: These procedures use focused light to remove damaged skin and stimulate collagen production. Laser treatments can improve skin texture and reduce the depth of marionette lines. Skin resurfacing: Methods like fractional laser or chemical peels remove the outer layers of skin to reveal fresher, smoother skin underneath. These treatments can improve skin tone and reduce the appearance of wrinkles over time. Choosing the right approach depends on your skin type, concerns, and desired outcomes. Combining natural remedies with professional treatments may offer the most comprehensive solution for addressing marionette lines. How to get rid of lines around mouth? Natural remedies, like facial massages, oils and certain skincare routines, may not completely eliminate marionette lines but can help prevent them from worsening by improving skin elasticity and hydration. While these methods offer gradual improvements, they don't provide the instant results of cosmetic treatments like botox or fillers. Before considering drastic treatments, it’s always wise to consult an esmi skin specialist and book a free skincare consult. They can guide you toward the best options for your skin type and concerns, ensuring that any decision aligns with your skincare goals and overall health!

In hot weather, use sunblock with a high SPF to protect against UV damage. Am I Dry or Dehydrated?

Am I dry? Am I dehydrated? Or am I both? It can be tricky to tell the difference between dryness and dehydration but there are some key factors that can tell these apart. What is dry skin? Dryness is a skin type that typically produces less natural oils than other types of skin which can cause the skin to appear dull, rough, flaky or even scaly. It often feels tight, looks noticeably dehydrated and may be prone to showing more visible fine lines. There can also be times where the skin becomes itchy, irritated or you may experience flaky areas of skin.  Dry skin is typically determined by genetics, although it will also be affected by other factors and can change with time. Occasionally the skin can be temporarily dry as a result of medications like accutane and antihistamines, etc. What is dehydrated skin? Dehydration is a skin condition that occurs when there’s a lack of water in the skin. This can happen to anyone, regardless of skin type. For example, people with oily or combination skin can still experience dehydration. Dehydrated skin suffers from trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), because the skin is missing the oils needed to hold the water in. Dehydration is often caused by external factors such as weather, environment, diet and diuretics such as alcohol and caffeine. It's typically recognised as dry, sometimes flaky with persistent tightness which can often leave the skin feeling dull and lacklustre. Itchiness and irritation, especially in cooler weather or temperature changes can be a sign your skin is dehydrated. Luckily, dehydration is temporary and there are ways to minimise this concern! *Skin nerd alert!* The skin is made up of 70 - 75% water and most of this is located deep in the dermis where it plays a crucial role in the skins defence. The outermost layer of the skin contains cells without nuclei and are cemented by intercorneocyte lipids. These lipids are crucial for the barrier function of the skin and if they are lacking or damaged it leads to increased water loss, known as Transepidermal water loss.  How can I tell what my skin type is? An easy method of determining your skin type is to thoroughly cleanse your skin and leave it free of any products for 30 minutes. After this time, take a look at your skin in the mirror and look for the following characteristics:  Dry skin: Dry, flaky areas and may feel tight Combination skin: Has a combination or both oily/shiny and flaky areas (usually the t-zone being oily and the other normal-dry) Oily skin: Looks shiny, may feel slick to the touch Sensitive skin: Redness and irritation present, may be painful to touch How can I tell if my skin is dehydrated? A pinch test can be completed at home to determine if your skin is dehydrated. On clean, dry skin, pinch a small area of your cheek and if you see any wrinkling or the skin doesn't bounce back quickly this will be a sign that your skin is dehydrated.  Dry skin tips If you are suffering with dry skin, the main goal is to help seal moisture into the skin and keep it nourished due to the lack of oils and lipids on the surface of the skin.  Using a gentle cleanser like The Uncomplicated Cleanser is key as this is a creamy, gentle formulation that doesn't strip natural oils from the skin!  Gentle exfoliation is important to remove any dead skin cells from the surface of the skin to allow your moisturiser or oil to absorb effectively. Layer oils over the top of your moisturiser. Our best-selling 24k Gold Nourishing Oil has the combination of Coconut, Jojoba, Avocado and Rosehip oil to lock in moisture. Taking internal supplements like Omega 3/Fish Oils to help barrier function and nourish the skin from the inside out.  Dehydrated skin tips If you are suffering from dehydrated skin, the main goal is to reduce water loss from the skin and increase nourishment to protect the skin's barrier. Here are some tips to combat: Using warm/tepid water instead of hot as this can dehydrate the skin. Drinking water of course! This does help to hydrate the skin & body. This is essential for a healthy, happy skin. Using our high powered Hyaluronic Hydrating Serum helps increase the skin's hydration levels by 25% in just 2 hours while helping to condition and repair the skin. Using a facial mist like our Skin Snack Mist to rehydrate the skin throughout the day, this has a powerhouse of hydrating and nourishing ingredients Incorporate our Thirsty Plumping Sheet Mask into your routine for the ultimate hydration for the skin, this works to deeply hydrate, rejuvenate and lock in moisture Just as there is a fine line between dryness and dehydration, the terms moisturising and hydrating can often be used interchangeably. Hydrators like Hyaluronic Acid boosts the skin's water content to help with water loss and dehydration on the skin. Whereas moisturisers help seal moisture into the skin to target dryness.

Creating a Skincare Routine for Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is a common issue marked by heightened reactions to environmental factors and skincare products, leading to redness, itching and irritation. Finding suitable skincare products and routines can be particularly challenging for those with sensitive skin due to the very common presence of fragrances, dyes and harsh chemicals found in many products and brands. Additionally, sensitive skin often reacts unpredictably to changes in weather, diet and stress. How to create a skincare routine for sensitive skin?  It can be tough out there for those with sensitive skin! Creating a skincare routine tailored to sensitive skin involves careful selection and use of products that nurture and protect the skin without causing irritation.  🤍 Keep things simple When you have sensitive skin, keeping your skincare routine simple is crucial. Using fewer products minimises the risk of irritation and allows your skin to maintain its natural balance. A simplified routine helps to ensure that you’re not overloading your skin with too many active ingredients that could potentially cause reactions. Additionally, sticking to a consistent routine allows your skin to adjust and become more resilient over time. Tips:  Limit the number of products: Avoiding a plethora of different products and ingredients is crucial. This reduces the chance of irritation and makes it easier to identify any product that might be causing a reaction. Avoid frequent changes: Changing products frequently can disrupt your skin’s balance. Give your skin time to adapt to new products to see how it truly responds. esmi Product Recommendations: The Uncomplicated Cleanser: This gentle cleanser effectively removes impurities without stripping the skin, making it ideal for sensitive skin types. Sensitive Skin Solution Bundle: Replenish and calm sensitive skin with this curation of products designed to assist those with sensitive skin. It's targeted at strengthening and repairing damaged and impaired barriers to promote strong happy skin! 🤍 Avoid harsh ingredients Avoiding harsh ingredients is essential to maintaining a healthy and irritation-free complexion. Harsh ingredients can strip the skin of its natural oils, disrupt its barrier, and cause redness, dryness, and inflammation. By steering clear of such ingredients, you can help ensure your skin remains calm and balanced. Tips:  Steer clear of alcohol, sulfates & parabens: These ingredients can be drying and irritating, leading to increased sensitivity and discomfort. Avoid Strong exfoliants initially: Ingredients like AHAs and BHAs can be too harsh for sensitive skin. If you choose to use them, introduce them slowly and monitor your skin’s reaction. Patch test new products: Before applying new products to your face, do a patch test on a small area of your skin to ensure they don’t cause irritation or an allergic reaction. esmi Product Recommendations Probiotic Skin Mylck Cleanser: Formulated with protective Probiotic Lysates to strengthen the skin's natural defence this creamy probiotic cleanser gently lifts away impurities for clearer, softer skin and a calmer barrier. Sensitive Moisturiser: Nurture your skin with the best moisturiser for sensitive skin. Restorative with lightweight nourishment, this gentle fragrance-free moisturising cream will help to strengthen and repair compromised barriers. Rose + Bamboo Gentle-Foliant: This Gentle-Foliant contains a natural oil closest to the molecular structure of skin's own sebum, Jojoba Oil, which helps to balance and calm skin. It can aid in reducing redness and skin repair.  🤍 Choose fragrance-free products When it comes to sensitive skin, avoiding fragrance in skincare products is crucial. Fragrances, whether natural or synthetic, can be irritating and allergenic, leading to redness, itching and inflammation. Opting for fragrance-free products helps minimize the risk of adverse reactions and ensures a gentler approach to skincare.  🤍 Stay moisturised Keeping sensitive skin moisturized is essential to maintaining its health and resilience. Moisturizing helps to fortify the skin’s natural barrier, preventing dryness, irritation, and environmental damage. Well-hydrated skin is better equipped to handle external stressors and is less likely to react to irritants. Tips: Use a gentle moisturiser: Apply these products while the skin is still damp to lock in moisture effectively. Opt for hyaluronic acid for maximum hydrating: These ingredients attract and retain moisture, keeping the skin hydrated and plump. esmi Product Recommendations: Hyaluronic Hydrating Serum: To combat dehydration for all skin types, the skin cell's water content can be replenished with a hydrating serum containing hyaluronic acid. Using hyaluronic acid for skin in the form of a serum means thirsty face cells receive much needed moisture quickly. Sensitive Moisturiser: Nurture your skin with the best moisturizer for sensitive skin. Restorative with lightweight nourishment, this gentle fragrance-free moisturising cream will help to strengthen and repair compromised barriers. Proboitic Skin Mylck: Our Probiotic Skin Mylck helps heal and strengthen hypersensitive skin. The lightweight moisturising lotion is formulated with 100% Australian made probiotics. 🤍 Apply SPF daily Applying SPF daily is crucial for all skin types, but it's especially important for sensitive skin. Sensitive skin can be more susceptible to damage from UV rays, which can exacerbate irritation, redness, and other skin conditions. Daily use of sunscreen helps protect your skin from harmful UV radiation, preventing immediate and long-term damage Protects from UV damage: Prevents sunburn and reduces the risk of skin cancer by blocking harmful UV rays. Prevents premature ageing: Regular use of sunscreen helps prevent photoaging, including wrinkles and sunspots, which can be more pronounced in sensitive skin. Maintains overall skin health: Consistent protection from UV exposure helps keep sensitive skin calm and reduces the likelihood of flare-ups and irritation. esmi Product Recommendations esmi Skin Shield Sunscreen SPF 30: The perfect everyday mineral sunscreen. Its non-greasy formula suits all skin types, and is very gentle on sensitive skin. This sunscreen is ideal for use on the face, absorbing beautifully into your skin and leaving you with long-lasting UV protection and hydration. Molecular Weight of Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is widely used in skincare products due to its incredible ability to hydrate the skin and reveal a plumper, smoother appearance.  A decreased amount of Hyaluronic Acid can lead to not just dehydration, but a lower elasticity of the skin - leading to the formation of fine lines. By maintaining moisture in the skin, using Hyaluronic Acid can help promote a youthful look.  So, what does Hyaluronic Acid look like?  Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in the human body, particularly in connective tissues, skin and eyes. It is known for its unique ability to retain water, which makes it an essential molecule for maintaining moisture and lubrication in tissues. Hyaluronic Acid is considered a humectant, meaning it attracts and binds to water molecules from the deeper layers of your skin and the air. The amount of HA in the skin is equivalent to 50% or more of the total amount of Hyaluronic Acid in the body which shows just how important this molecule is for not just our skin but bodily functions overall! What is molecular weight in terms of Hyaluronic Acid? Molecular weight correlates to the size of the HA molecule being used in a skincare formula and is predetermined by the source of that particular molecule (whether it's animal based or even man made!). The greater the weight, the larger the molecule.  The skin has quite a strict entry policy and will only allow an ingredient's molecules of a certain size to pass through the skin barrier and then travel into the cells to make those changes we like to see in the skin. For example, collagen is a molecule that is far too big to pass through the skin barrier and if not adjusted in the formula properly will just sit on the surface of the skin rather than be absorbed.  The molecular weight of esmi's Hyaluronic Hydrating Serum esmi's Hyaluronic Hydrating Serum contains a Cube3 broad-spectrum hyaluronic acid. This features a cubed triple action technology, and is based on a full spectrum of molecule lengths - a combination of small and large molecular weight. This means it acts harmoniously on a range of molecules just like when hyaluronic acid is naturally found in your body. A broad spectrum Hyaluronic Acid is ideal to keep the skin's moisture content high for an increased period of time.  After 24 hours, our Cube3 Hyaluronic Acid demonstrates greater performance versus both low (55% more efficient) or high (125% more efficient) molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid. Our Cube3 can also show an enhancement of the penetration of other active ingredients too, both water and oil soluble!  Being a broad spectrum ingredient, this has also been proven to slow down water loss from the skin barrier to 25% in 2 hours.

Let's Talk Probiotics!

Pre-, pro- and post-, what are they and how can they be used in skincare? Let's dive into their functions and how they can help repair an imbalanced skin barrier.  What is the skin microbiome?  The skin microbiome refers to the diverse collection of microorganisms that live on the surface of the skin, including bacteria, fungi, viruses and mites. These microorganisms play an essential role in the skin's health, regulating the skin's pH, protecting the skin from harmful pathogens and regulating the skin's immune response.  What are the signs of a microbiome imbalance?   Some of the signs of an imbalance include:  Acne Dryness & flaking Redness & irritation  Increased sensitivity  Excessive oil production  Persistent skin conditions (Eczema, Perioral Dermatitis, Psoriasis)  Slow healing What are pre, post & probiotics?  Prebiotics Essentially food for the skin, they can help promote the growth of beneficial bacteria while discouraging the growth of harmful ones. Probiotics These are microorganisms and when applied topically they can help to strengthen the skin's natural defences, support barrier function and reduce inflammation. Postbiotics What you get when Probiotics 'eat' Prebiotics - the fermented byproduct provides similar benefits to Probiotics without the need for live microorganisms. This is the most common of the '-biotics' found in skincare. Where can I find them in the esmi range?  Probiotic Skin Mylcks Our Probiotic Skin Mylcks contain Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lysate, which is a bacteria that has been optimised and extracted from the Probiotic function and encapsulated as a Probiotic Lysate. Whilst a Lysate is not live, it was once a viable Probiotic cell, but is now a collection of cell components fragmented into a concentrated dose of Probiotic function. It is also a safer, more stable way to include Probiotic function in formulations to ensure efficacy.  Lysates probiotic bacteria possess a wide range of properties: they can be anti- inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antioxidant, stimulate wound healing and stabilising. We are the first skincare company using a 100% Australian-made Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lysate produced in Australia’s first and only cGMP/TGA certified facility for probiotic API manufacturing! This particular Probiotic has been carefully selected and researched for its incredible benefits for the skin. Thirsty Skin Plumping Sheet Mask Our Thirsty Skin Plumping Mask contains Pineapple and Papaya ferment (Lactobacillus/Ananas Sativa Ferment Filtrate, Lactobacillus/Papaya Carica Ferment Filtrate) which is rich in postbiotics from the fermentation process. Both fruits are enriched with enzymes that help to exfoliate away dead skin as well as brighten the skin! Haircare Our haircare range has been optimised with a trademarked esmi Biome blend that is tailored to your individual hair concerns.  See the table below to read about our esmi Biome blends for more information.

Vegan Skincare Benefits: A Healthier Approach to Beauty

Vegan... Skincare? What on earth does that mean?! Vegan skincare means that it is free from animal-derived ingredients and isn't tested on animals. Instead, plant-based alternatives are used. Ingredients like beeswax, lanolin and collagen are replaced with cruelty-free options. Vegan skincare is becoming more popular in this day and age as we become more aware of our ethical and environmental footprint. Many more people are striving to include vegan skincare in their beauty routine as a way of supporting ethical consumption and environmental preservation while being gentle on the skin. Benefits of using vegan skincare  Vegan skincare products offer numerous benefits, including the use of natural, plant-based ingredients that are often a lot more gentle on the skin. They avoid harsh chemicals and animal by-products, reducing the risk of irritation and allergies. Beyond clean beauty, embracing vegan skincare supports the well-being of animals by avoiding animal testing and ingredients. It also promotes environmental sustainability through eco-friendly sourcing and packaging. By choosing vegan products, you prioritise ethical consumption and the health of our planet. Incorporating vegan skincare into your routine can lead to healthier, more radiant skin while making a positive impact on the world. Planet-friendly & cruelty-free  Vegan skincare products are often made with sustainable practices, reducing the environmental footprint and ensuring that no animals are harmed in the process. Non-toxic formulations These products avoid harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients, opting instead for natural, plant-based components that are safer for both your skin and overall health. Good for your health  By using ingredients free from pesticides, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, vegan skincare products can minimise the risk of negative health effects and promote overall wellness. Effective and better for your skin Many vegan skincare products are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which can nourish, protect, and improve the appearance of your skin more effectively than conventional products. Is your skincare vegan? To identify whether a product is vegan or non-vegan, consider the following steps: Check the Packaging: Look for labels or certifications stating "vegan" or "cruelty-free." Examine the Logo: Recognize trusted vegan logos such as the Vegan Society's sunflower logo, Leaping Bunny, or PETA's cruelty-free bunny. Identify animal-derived ingredients: While we are moving forward in the world of vegan skincare, there's still a lot for us to look out for. Learn to spot scientific names of common non-vegan ingredients: Beeswax (Cera Alba): Often found in balms and moisturisers. Lanolin (Adeps Lanae): Derived from sheep's wool, used in lotions. Collagen: Animal protein used for anti-ageing benefits. Keratin: Found in hair care products, sourced from animal hooves and horns. Carmine (Cochineal extract): Red pigment from crushed beetles, used in makeup. Common non-vegan ingredients to avoid: Glycerin (unless plant-based): Can be animal or plant-derived. Stearic Acid: Often from animal fat, though plant-based versions exist. Squalene: Traditionally sourced from shark liver oil, now also derived from plants. Empower consumers: By understanding labels and ingredient lists, consumers can confidently switch to a vegan skincare routine. Embrace products that are kind to your skin, animals, and the environment for a compassionate and healthy beauty regimen. Caffeine Skincare Benefits

Caffeine, often associated with our morning cup of coffee, extends its benefits beyond a wake-up call.  esmi Skin Minerals recognises the power of caffeine in skincare, harnessing its potential for remarkable results. While we often rely on caffeine for a mental boost, its application in skincare products offers a multitude of benefits. Let's explore the myriad advantages that caffeine-infused skincare brings to the table, shedding light on its rejuvenating properties and how it can totally transform your skincare routine. The magical benefits of caffeine in skincare products Caffeine skincare products bring a bundle of benefits to your routine when used regularly. They tighten, firm, and zap away puffiness and dark circles, all while adding a touch of refreshment to your skincare ritual. It's like a morning cup of coffee for your face, but with extra perks... Let's get into them. ☕ Reduces puffiness Caffeine in skincare boasts vasoconstrictive properties, meaning it can shrink blood vessels. This effect is particularly handy around the eyes, where it helps diminish puffiness and dark circles by reducing blood flow. Think of it as a mini spa treatment for tired eyes, courtesy of caffeine. ☕ Improves firmness Research suggests that caffeine in skincare may stimulate collagen production, enhancing skin elasticity and firmness. This boost in collagen can help combat wrinkles and fine lines, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin. So, incorporating caffeine into your skincare routine isn't just a wake-up call for your face; it's a step towards firmer, more resilient skin! ☕ Provides antioxidant properties Caffeine in skincare isn't just a pick-me-up; it's a powerhouse of antioxidants. These antioxidants act as shields, protecting your skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation and pollution. By warding off environmental aggressors, caffeine helps maintain a youthful appearance, keeping your skin looking fresh and vibrant. It's like having a protective barrier against the elements, courtesy of your skincare routine! ☕ Better circulation When applied topically in skincare products, caffeine has the remarkable ability to enhance blood flow. By promoting better circulation to and within the skin, it fosters a healthier complexion over time. This improved blood flow nourishes the skin, giving it a radiant, revitalised appearance. It's like a little boost of energy for your skin cells, resulting in a naturally vibrant complexion. How to incorporate caffeine skincare products into your routine esmi offers a variety of eye serums enriched with caffeine, each designed to target specific concerns around the delicate eye area. The Low-Down on Cleansing

Cleansing your skin is the essential process of removing dirt, oil, makeup, and impurities from the surface of your skin to maintain its health and appearance. The goal is to achieve a clean, refreshed complexion that promotes overall skin health and vitality.  Why does cleansing matter so much? It seems like such a simple step, but cleansing is up there as one of the most important steps of your skincare routine (next to applying your SPF!). Ensuring you are using a gentle cleanser that doesn't strip the skin's natural oils or disrupt the barrier, allows for your skin to start off with a great base for other skincare goodies to absorb properly into the skin. Would you add ingredients to the pot if it was covered in cling wrap? NO.   The skin works hard to keep the baddies out and the goodies in, being the largest organ of our immunity system. During the day our skin is exposed to dirt, debris and other environmental pollutants that can trigger inflammation and cause oxidative stress on the surface of the skin. This can result in concerns of pigmentation, dullness, histamine reactions such as rashes/itchiness and breakouts.  Cleansing (or double cleansing, if you have the time) removes these impurities from the surface of the skin and also works to melt away residue of cosmetics, which can contain waxes and oils that can create a film on the skin.   This daily routine helps to prevent clogged pores, breakouts, and other skin issues, while also preparing your skin to better absorb other skincare products like moisturizers and serums. Should I be using gel, cream, oil, foaming or a balm cleanser? End of the day, as long as the skin is feeling happy and soft you can continue with whichever type of cleanser you are loving the feel of. However anything really sudsy or containing AHA/BHAs will slightly remove oil from the surface of the skin - so if you're a little more on the dry side we suggest staying with a more creamy formulation.  Our range of Uncomplicated Cleansers are perfect for all skin types. The gentle cream formula balances skin and won’t leave it dry or tight, just clean, calm, and supple. The formulation focuses on cleansing while supporting skin hydration and maintaining a healthy oil/moisture balance. It gently removes all traces of makeup, dirt, excess oil, and other impurities, while calming and protecting skin (win, win!). Top tips for cleansing Here are our top tips for cleansing your face to squeaky clean status.  Anything that touches your face should be clean  Wash your face using lukewarm water and your favourite cleanser - Anything warmer than lukewarm will dry you up, sis! Double cleanse when wearing makeup Don't forget your neck and décolletage Be gentle when drying your face Follow with hydration Did you know?! A typical cosmetic product will contain anything from 15–50 ingredients. Our Uncomplicated Cleanser has just twelve. It is simple and so effective! So next time you are cleansing your face, take a moment to appreciate the hard work your skin does keeping you pathogen free.  All The Uncomplicated Cleansers have the same great base of ingredients, so if your skin loves the OG, it may be worth trying to try our other cleansers that target a specific skin concern. For example: The Uncomplicated Cleanser plus Anti-Redness contains Tasmanian Mountain Pepper that helps reduce redness and puffiness associated with inflammation, also a powerful antioxidant to help strengthen and protect skin cells.

How to Introduce Retinol into your Skincare Routine

Introducing retinol into your skincare routine requires a thoughtful approach to ensure effectiveness while minimizing potential side effects. What is retinol? Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A known for its ability to promote skin renewal, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and improve skin texture. It's commonly used to address signs of aging and acne. Your step-by-step guide to introducing retinol Start slowly: If you're new to retinol, begin with a low concentration to allow your skin to adjust gradually. esmi's retinol collection is ranked in levels - Level 1 being the lowest concentration of encapsulated retinol at 0.25% and Level 4 being the highest at 1.0%.   Consider the concentration: Opt for a formulation suited to your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, consider a gentle formulation or consult with a dermatologist for recommendations. Patch test: Before applying retinol to your entire face, perform a patch test on a small area of your skin, such as your forearm, to check for any adverse reactions or irritation. Apply at night: Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so  apply it at night so it can work its magic while you slumber. Take it easy: Don't go applying it every night. Start off using it once a week and build up your tolerance. Start by using it every other night or a few times a week to minimise irritation. Cleanse your skin: Begin with a gentle cleanser to remove makeup, dirt and impurities from your skin before applying retinol. Apply a pea-sized amount: A little goes a long way with retinol. Use a pea-sized amount for your entire face to avoid over-application, which can lead to irritation. Moisturise: After applying retinol, follow up with a moisturiser to help hydrate and soothe your skin. Look for a non-comedogenic formula that won't clog pores. Apply sunscreen: During the day, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from UV damage. This is especially important when using retinol, as it can increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun. Be patient: Results from retinol may take time to appear, so be patient and consistent with your skincare routine. It can take several weeks to see improvements in skin texture and tone. Skin Care for Dry Skin

Dry skin can be a real diva, can't it? One day it's smooth, supple, and glowing. The next, it decides to throw a tantrum - leaving you with a parched and flaky complexion. The unpredictability of dry skin can be frustrating, we get it. With the right routine and products, you can tame this temperamental beast and keep your skin looking and feeling its best. In this blog, we'll explore some tried-and-true tips and tricks for treating dry skin, along with recommendations for the best skincare products to help you achieve a healthy, radiant complexion. Why is dry skin hard to treat? Dry skin is challenging to treat due to its complex underlying mechanisms and the potential for exacerbation over time without proper care. The skin barrier, composed of lipids and proteins, acts as a protective shield against external factors. When the skin lacks sufficient moisture, this barrier becomes compromised, leading to susceptibility to irritants and moisture loss. Without quality skin care, the skin's lipid barrier weakens, allowing water to evaporate more easily and leaving the skin parched. Over time, the skin's natural ability to retain moisture diminishes, exacerbating dryness and potentially leading to conditions like eczema or dermatitis. Research indicates that prolonged exposure to harsh environmental conditions, such as low humidity or excessive cleansing, can further disrupt the skin barrier, contributing to persistent dryness. Without intervention, chronic dry skin can lead to discomfort, itching, inflammation, and premature aging. Thus, effective treatment strategies should focus on replenishing moisture, reinforcing the skin barrier, and addressing underlying factors contributing to dryness. Ingredient Spotlight: Blue Tansy

Scientifically known as Tanacetum annuum, Blue tansy is one of the newer ingredients to join the esmi skin care ingredients list. It has quickly become a popular ingredient, due to its extensive list of benefits (and beautiful colour!). 💙 What is blue tansy? Blue Tansy is a flowering plant that is found in Spain, Morocco and Portugal. It is actually a member of the daisy family and looks quite similar to Chamomile when in bloom. Plot twist - Blue Tansy is actually yellow in colour. However, it gets its distinguishable blue colour during the steam distillation process of the plant's flowers. The essential oil extracted from the plant is valued highly in skincare, as well as aromatherapy. Loved for its calming aura and anti-inflammatory properties. 💙 Benefits of blue tansy  Blue Tansy is popular for the following benefits. Anti-inflammatory properties: The plant contains chamazulene, a compound known for its potent anti-inflammatory effects. It can help soothe irritated skin, calm redness, and reduce inflammation. This is particularly beneficial for those with conditions like acne, eczema, and rosacea. Antioxidant power: Rich in antioxidants, blue tansy helps combat free radicals that can damage skin cells and accelerate aging. Antioxidants help protect the skin from external stressors and promote a youthful complexion. Balancing & healing: Blue tansy is renowned for its balancing properties, making it suitable for all skin types, including oily, dry, and combination skin. It helps regulate oil production, which makes it great for acne-prone skin. Additionally, it aids in healing minor wounds, cuts and blemishes. Calming & soothing: The aroma of blue tansy essential oil has a calming effect on the mind and body. When used in skincare products, it provides a relaxing and comforting experience, making it ideal for reducing stress and promoting overall wellbeing. Anti-bacterial: Blue tansy possesses natural anti-bacterial properties, making it effective in fighting acne-causing bacteria. Gentle exfoliation: Blue tansy contains natural enzymes that offer gentle exfoliation, helping to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover, resulting in smoother, brighter skin. 💙 Where to find Blue Tansy in esmi's skin care Blue Tansy features in two of our esmi products: the Hydrating Hydra-Fluid Moisturiser (at 0.05%) and our Afterglow Rejuvenating Bakuchiol (at 0.06%).
