Let's Talk Probiotics!
Pre-, pro- and post-, what are they and how can they be used in skincare? Let's dive into their functions and how they can help repair an imbalanced skin barrier.
What is the skin microbiome?
The skin microbiome refers to the diverse collection of microorganisms that live on the surface of the skin, including bacteria, fungi, viruses and mites. These microorganisms play an essential role in the skin's health, regulating the skin's pH, protecting the skin from harmful pathogens and regulating the skin's immune response.
What are the signs of a microbiome imbalance?
Some of the signs of an imbalance include:
- Acne
- Dryness & flaking
- Redness & irritation
- Increased sensitivity
- Excessive oil production
- Persistent skin conditions (Eczema, Perioral Dermatitis, Psoriasis)
- Slow healing
What are pre, post & probiotics?
Prebiotics
Essentially food for the skin, they can help promote the growth of beneficial bacteria while discouraging the growth of harmful ones.
Probiotics
These are microorganisms and when applied topically they can help to strengthen the skin's natural defences, support barrier function and reduce inflammation.
Postbiotics
What you get when Probiotics 'eat' Prebiotics - the fermented byproduct provides similar benefits to Probiotics without the need for live microorganisms. This is the most common of the '-biotics' found in skincare.
Where can I find them in the esmi range?
Our Probiotic Skin Mylcks contain Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lysate, which is a bacteria that has been optimised and extracted from the Probiotic function and encapsulated as a Probiotic Lysate. Whilst a Lysate is not live, it was once a viable Probiotic cell, but is now a collection of cell components fragmented into a concentrated dose of Probiotic function. It is also a safer, more stable way to include Probiotic function in formulations to ensure efficacy.
Lysates probiotic bacteria possess a wide range of properties: they can be anti- inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antioxidant, stimulate wound healing and stabilising. We are the first skincare company using a 100% Australian-made Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lysate produced in Australia’s first and only cGMP/TGA certified facility for probiotic API manufacturing! This particular Probiotic has been carefully selected and researched for its incredible benefits for the skin.
Thirsty Skin Plumping Sheet Mask
Our Thirsty Skin Plumping Mask contains Pineapple and Papaya ferment (Lactobacillus/Ananas Sativa Ferment Filtrate, Lactobacillus/Papaya Carica Ferment Filtrate) which is rich in postbiotics from the fermentation process. Both fruits are enriched with enzymes that help to exfoliate away dead skin as well as brighten the skin!
